This Tiny Lock is the First Thing I Pack for Every Hotel Stay
A flight attendant’s honest take on the one safety item I never leave home without.
Let me paint you a picture.
It’s 1 a.m. You just landed after a long flight, you drag yourself into your hotel room and crash. You trust that the door lock is doing its job.
Here’s a reminder though: a hotel key card lock can be opened from the outside. By housekeeping, by the front desk, or by anyone with a master key.
After 20+ years as a flight attendant, I always pack this portable door lock. It’s a palm-sized stainless steel device that slips into your door latch from the inside. Once it’s in, that door is not opening for anyone. Not with a key card, not with a master key, not with anything.
Installation takes 10 seconds. No tools. Works in the dark. Works on most hotel doors, Airbnbs, dormitories, and cruise cabins. The whole thing is smaller than your passport. Toss it in your carry-on and forget it exists until you need it.

No lock handy? Try this: cross two coat hangers over your door latch. It sounds a little MacGyver-ish, but it genuinely adds an extra layer of security when you need it.

One heads up: it doesn’t work on sliding doors or European lever-style handles. Coat hanger time! 😄
As with any security tool, use it responsibly and always be mindful of your surroundings!
Solo travelers, Airbnb guests, and cruise passengers: this one is for you. It’s surprisingly affordable, weighs nothing, and gives you genuine peace of mind every single night on the road.
